Everyone’s Still Chasing Full-Time Dev Roles — But the Smart Ones Are Doing This Instead
Are you still believing in 9-to-5 to get rich or even sustain a good life?

A few years ago, all I wanted was a good full-time developer job and to just grow up day by day.
Decent salary. Some benefits. Maybe a bit of remote work to enjoy with my family and friends.
Sounds good, right?
But once I got there… something felt off.
I was coding less and attending more meetings.
I was “growing” on paper, but I didn’t feel excited and I didn’t know why.
And the worst part? I was all the time worried about job security and I know you can feel this too!
Doesn’t matter how well you work, there is always a sword hanging on top of you.
Then I noticed something.
Some of the smartest people I knew weren’t chasing full-time jobs anymore they were enjoying their work but what was different?
They were doing things differently — and they looked way more in control of their careers.
Let me explain.
What Are These Smart Devs Doing?
Instead of sticking to one job, here’s what many of them are exploring:
1. Freelancing or Contract Work
They take on short-term, part-time projects or provide consultancy to people, often for global clients.
- More freedom.
- Fewer office politics.
- Good money too.
2. Building Side Projects and Branding Themselves
Most of them were making apps, websites, or tools.
Even if they don’t go viral or even live, these projects show real skills — and sometimes become income sources or even sharing them on social media and using it to brand themselves.
3. Creating Content or Teaching
Many are writing blogs, making videos, or sharing tips online. This helps build their brand — and sometimes brings in extra cash.
4. Working Fractionally for Startups
This means working 10–20 hours a week for a startup providing consultancy using their experience, instead of 40+ hours.
It’s flexible, and you get to work on exciting things without burning out.
Why Are People Moving Away from Full-Time Roles?
Here’s the reality:
- Layoffs are more common than ever, You never know who is next in the list
- Career growth in big companies is slow with an average hike of 3–8%
- You often end up doing less coding and more meetings, collecting requirements
- You rely on one company for your entire income, HUGE HUGE Mistake in today’s time when it’s really easy to earn money digitally.
It’s not that full-time jobs are bad, but they make you dependent and it’s like a smaller dose of addictive ingredients (SALARY🤑) and then after some time you become so comfortable that you’re ready to live in fear instead of growing!!
They just don’t work for everyone — especially if you want more freedom, faster learning, or better work-life balance.
My Experience
I used to believe switching jobs every 1–2 years was the way to grow which I did and I grew my income to 900% which is good, But honestly, it just felt like jumping from one box to another and now I am myself making 2–3 sources of income and medium is one of them.
Now, I still work — but I mix things up.
- I have a part-time contract with a client I enjoy working with. I delegate that work to have time and freedom, and money actually comes into my pocket while I provide employment.
- Some content creation on the side of Medium, and LinkedIn.
- I started my own company where I help people grow in IT (2X their salary) as I did.
For the first time, I feel like I actually own my career and I love it❤️.
What You Can Do
You don’t have to quit your job tomorrow. But you can start small:
- Pick up one small freelance gig just make your account on Fiverr or freelancer.in and be active, I have seen people who did the same and now working as a freelancer.
- Start sharing what you’re learning online, and build a personal brand so that you never run out of offer letters
- Explore open roles that aren’t full-time (part-time, contract, etc.)
Even tiny steps can lead to big changes over time.
My advice — Don’t be dependent on a single source of income, If you haven’t started yet. Believe me there is no best time then Today
Just Something to Think About
If you feel stuck, bored, or burnt out in your full-time job, just remember
- You’re not alone.
- You’re not “wrong” for wanting more freedom or variety.
The world of tech is changing fast — and now more than ever,
you can build a career that really works for YOU.
